Melodic Bridges: Communicating With Autism

Music, song, and sound have always captivated me, elements of the universal language that transcends words through varying pitches and cadences, creating connections that are much more profound than the sum of their parts. Similar to spoken language, which could be viewed as a song without melody, music holds a unique power to bind communication and emotion. Yet, my understanding of these elements deepened remarkably when my son, who is non-verbal and autistic, came into my life; his angelic smile and pure demeanour eventually introduced a new dimension to my appreciation of music.

Living with autism can be likened to navigating the vastness of outer space, the more we explore, the more expansive and mysterious it becomes. This analogy captures the ever-evolving journey of understanding and adapting to autism, filled with challenges and profound discoveries. My son communicates using an iPad app designed to help him express basic needs and emotions. Despite this technology, he frequently encounters frustration due to difficulties conveying more complex thoughts or feelings. This struggle can lead to moments of intense distress for him, which are very hard on him and also those around him.

During one particularly challenging moment, influenced perhaps subconsciously by a scene from the film "Elf" where the character sings his intentions rather than speaking them, I found myself singing our plans for the day rather than stating them. The immediate effect was astonishing—his usual frustration dissolved into calm almost immediately. Encouraged by this breakthrough, I began incorporating song into our daily routine, transforming our communication into a musical dialogue. This approach has not only alleviated moments of stress but has also turned into a joyful method of interaction between us. Though he does not use words, he joins in with melodies using the simple ooooh sound and more importantly, he ooohs in tune 😊.  These impromptu performances bring us immense joy.

The impact of music and singing on my son reflects current broader scientific findings. Research indicates that music activates various brain functions simultaneously, including those related to language, emotion, and motor skills, which are particularly pertinent for individuals with autism. A study in the journal Music Therapy Perspectives suggests that music therapy can foster social behaviours and reduce stress in children with autism by providing a structured environment that allows them to express themselves in non-verbal ways.  Whether this be the case or not, the fact is it calms him dramatically; calm allows growth and healing if required, and it also allows for a calm and settled relationship to permeate our shared path, which, all told is quite simply a beautiful miracle.

From a spiritual perspective, the purity and innocence of my son’s engagement with music adds a deeper layer of connection. Many cultures and spiritual traditions recognise music as a form of healing and an expression of the divine. For my son, music transcends ordinary communication barriers, reaching him in a place where conventional language does not. This is not just a therapeutic tool but a beautiful, sacred interaction that underscores his intrinsic worth and our profound bond.

The continued use of music in our daily interactions not only enriches our connection but also holds the potential for profound developmental benefits. Engaging with music might enable him to harness preferred neural pathways that seem particularly responsive to song. This could potentially lead to a future where he may use singing as a form of communication, finding his voice through melodies and rhythms. However, it's also entirely possible that he may choose not to pursue traditional verbal communication, finding contentment and expression in communicating through smiles, hums, and the pure love he emanates. These non-verbal exchanges, filled with genuine affection and understanding, might continue to be just as effective and meaningful for him.

There may be a bit of overuse of analogies in this piece, but to use a final one, navigating life with autism can be likened to exploring uncharted territory, each path reveals new layers and hidden nuances. This journey with my son has opened a world of possibilities that continuously unfold through our shared language of music. Each melody sung and every tune hummed between us weaves a deeper bond and fosters an environment of understanding and love. This musical dialogue, though non-verbal on his part, speaks volumes, teaching us that communication is not limited to words but can be profoundly felt and shared through the universal language of music. Our journey through the complexities of autism reveals an immense potential for connection and discovery as we find new ways to connect and communicate through music, much like explorers discovering new paths in uncharted territory.

This musical journey is not merely about coping with the challenges of autism but about transforming these challenges into opportunities for connection and growth. Recognising the intricate layers of autism has deepened our understanding and connection with each other. Life with a severely autistic child is certainly no walk in the park, but through song and music, navigating these challenges has become a little easier, bringing calm to a sometimes chaotic place. This narrative continues to unfold, with each day bringing new insights and a deeper appreciation for the power of music to touch us in unique ways, offering both of us a more prosperous, more harmonious way to connect with each other and the world around us.

Melodic Bridges

(By Patrick Quinn)

In the quiet twilight’s tender glow,
Where whispers of the cosmos gently flow,
Therein lies a sacred, unseen thread
That binds us in a dance where words are shed.

My dearest child, with eyes like starlit seas,
Your soul’s deep chambers hold the silent keys.
Through music’s might, your spirit speaks to mine,
In notes that soar and with the divine entwine.

A symphony composed of the purest light,
With melodies that chase the shadows of the night.
Each harmony, a vessel of our love,
Sails us beneath the vast skies above.

The voice’s lilt, our sacred choir’s sweep,
Melodic bridges cradle dreams and sleep.
With every breath, our hearts together swell,
In raptured bliss where words can scarce dwell.

Ours is a journey through the sublime,
Where time dissolves in the eternal chime.
For in each measure of our sacred song,
I find the place where you and I belong.

Together we traverse this wide, wild sphere,
In melodies that echo far and near.
My child, in you, I see the boundless sky,
And through our music, we shall never die.
